This post has been written to provide an update about the Gosport Weather website and why the weather station has gone offline.
Gosport Weather launched a new project in the spring of 2012.This project was launched after one of the driest winters on record. It was decided that Gosport Weather should start collecting data about the soil temperature and moisture as it already provided the surface temperature to detect ground frosts and this project would complement this and provide extra valuable information to gardeners.
Unfortunately this project has been very unsuccessful with the soil moisture sensors failing shortly after being 'planted' in the chosen location. Testing has been carried out by Gosport Weather and the seller throughout the past year.
In recent weeks the seller has tested the station and returned it claiming that there are no problems with the sensors. However upon return to Gosport Weather it failed the tests again and despite the seller claiming there is nothing wrong, the data they have provided to Gosport Weather suggests otherwise.
It has been decided that in order to determine exactly what is going on with the station and its sensors an independent tester would be asked to carry out further testing. As a result of an email from the seller suggesting that the problem may lie with the weather station console this has also been sent for testing.
As a result of the console being tested, this means there is no way of receiving data from the other components that make up the weather station. The decision to send the console for testing was not taken lightly as we knew it would have a huge effect on the data transfer process from the station to the website.
We would like to reassure visitors that the weather forecast is being updated as per normal and temperature and weather conditions data is being provided by a nearby Met Office weather station. The rain data is being provided by another of our weather stations.
We hope to have Gosport Weather back to normal service as soon as possible. We will continue to battle on with getting the soil station online as we are sure that this data will be of interest to visitors. We are also using this unscheduled weather station downtime to update our homepage. As a result we hope that Gosport Weather will emerge at the end of this fiasco a better service. We apologise for the inconvenience this issue is causing but we thank you for your continued support of Gosport Weather.
