Meteorological winter has arrived. This means that throughout December, January and February we will be measuring any snowfall, issuing warnings when appropriate and monitoring the extra temperature sensor.
Here at Gosport Weather snow is recorded manually and input directly in to the weather software with the website being updated shortly afterwards. During cold spells when there is a high risk of snow and low risk of rain the rain gauge will be covered up to prevent errors in rainfall recordings. Snow recordings will be uploaded every 12 hours at approximately 9am and 9pm.
The extra temperature sensor acts as a grass minimum thermometer and is used to detect ground frosts during the winter months. The readings and records from the sensor are located on the homepage under the heading 'Grass Temperature'. Drivers are advised to check this temperature before travelling. We also advise that people bear in mind that whilst Gosport Weather may not be recording a frost the temperature around Gosport and the Portsmouth area can vary dramatically and may result in other areas suffering a frost.
We are currently unable to determine whether Gosport will see snow on Christmas Day or on the days before or after it. We will however continue to monitor the forecast and charts and update the website when snow is likely.
