The Gosport Weather Station has been online for one year now and a lot has changed since last December.
Many may not know this but Gosport Weather superseded an old weather website called pompeymet.co.uk. The reason pompeymet was abandoned was due to the lack of an automatic weather station (AWS) which meant data could not be uploaded automatically. Once the Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station was purchased we quickly set about testing all parts of the system and developing the website. The website became fully operational at midnight on 1st January of this year.
In the beginning Gosport Weather relied on a program called Weather Link. This program uploaded HTML images and it was found that the program would often freeze and record false data. It was decided that after successfully testing a program called Weather Display, it would become the main weather program.
With the introduction of Weather Display came a complete website revamp. The HTML homepage was removed and in it's place came the current website which is of PHP format. This enabled dynamic pages which would update most of the weather data every few seconds. The current website was created using scripts from Ken True of saratoga-weather.org and Scott of websterweatherlive.com.
The weather station was also upgraded with the addition of UV and Solar sensors which have been proving very reliable and have enabled us to report the current sky conditions during daylight instead of having to rely on Southampton airport.
The future for Gosport Weather is very bright. We will soon be able to issue warnings when pre-set weather variables have been breached. More on this will follow soon. We are currently working on setting up a mailing list, as our current server only allows us to add and remove email addresses, however we want to allow visitors to subscribe and un-subscribe themselves.
We are also waiting for the owner of a piece of software called WXSIM to finish customising it for our location. This will enable us to issue weather forecasts online and by email.
